HARGEYSA ( Halbeeg News) – The authorities in Somaliland has officially shut down the internet to curb the leakage of exams in the Northern Somali self-declared state.
According to the Human Rights Centre based in Hargeysa, social media is also blocked across Somaliland region whole this week from 7 am to 1300.
“Social media is blocked in Somaliland in this week from 7 am to 13:00 for national exams” the chair of Human Rights Centre, Gulaid Ahmed Jama confirmed.
Internet providers enforced the directive by the authorities.
More than 29500 students in the area kicked off the examinations on Saturday.
Somaliland leader, Muse Bihi Abdi kicked off the process of distributing exams papers in one of the schools he studied 53 years ago.
He called for equal education rights for all students in the region.
The Somali government was forced to cancel unified national exams last month following widespread leakage via social media.
The exam papers were reset and new date announced for the repeat examination.
An education official suspected to be behind the leakage was detained by the police for interrogation.
Four students were wounded in the aftermath protests following the cancellation.
