HARGEISA (Halbeeg News) – Somaliland, a breakaway region in northern Somalia will hold its presidential elections next year, the region’s poll agency confirmed Tuesday.
In a statement the Somaliland Electoral Commission declared that it would conduct its long-awaited national union and presidential elections on December 28, 2023, and November 13, 2024, respectively.
The electoral commission stated the new dates were set after extensive consultations with political stakeholders to ease tensions.
The poll agency called for finalization of draft election rules and collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure smooth electoral proceedings.
Last year, at least five people were killed, and 100 others injured in Somaliland when security forces clashed with protesters demanding presidential elections to be held in November. After his constitutional mandate expired, the opposition announced that they would no longer recognize Muse Bihi’s presidency.
Somaliland had declared to have seceded from Somalia in 1990 after the fall of the government led by the late Mohamed Siad Barre.
The region which succeeded to restore peace has held parliamentary and presidential elections. But the region failed to gain international recognition.
