HARGEISA ( Halbeeg News) – Somaliland has sworn in new electoral commission barely a day after the region’s House of Elders approved another term extension for itself and the Lower House.
In a ceremony held in Hargeisa town, the region’s Chief Justice Adan Haji Ali Ahmed presided over the swearing-in six members of the commission.
The ceremony was also attended by the region’s President Musa Bihi Abdi.
Last Saturday, House of Elders voted to extend the life of parliament effectively postponing the elections to 2022.
Somaliland has been postponing the parliamentary election since 2010, a move condemned by the opposition parties and activists in the region.
Somaliland proclaimed independence from the rest of Somalia after the collapse of the central government of Somalia led by the late Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
Despite restoring peace in its region, but Somaliland has failed to secure international recognition.
