HARGEISA (Halbeeg News) – Somaliland Electoral Commission has postponed the elections of Lower House members and councilors which was slated for early next year.
The election was initially scheduled to take place 29th March 2019.
According to statement, the commission said the Parliamentary and Municipality elections will be delayed due to issues related to lack of cooperation between the electoral body and political parties and other challenges.
“Lack of cross-party cooperation, especially on the part Wadani political party, which earlier this year (March 2018) declared to have stopped all working relations with the National Electoral Commission and still maintains the status quo to present date. Lack of cross-party understanding regarding the holding of the upcoming parliamentary and local government’s election,” reads the statement.
The commission has also underscored that another factor which facilitated the delay of the election say the longstanding contentions on the issue of allocation of the House of Representatives seats, the quota for women and minority groups, and the irregularities of the electoral laws such as the numbers of the regional seats allocations and elections constitutes demarcations.
According to the statement, the International Community also declared that they will not be able to fund the additional costs of the election that the decision to delay the Parliamentary and local government elections will and the burden will therefore regrettably fall on the Somaliland people.
In accordance with the constitution of Somaliland, the National Electoral Commission shall set a date for the holding of election of November 29, 2018, and the President shall issue s decree no later than 13 December 2018
