Hargeisa (Halbeeg News) – The Somaliland Police Monday released lawmaker Mohamed Abiib Yusuf after the Supreme Court ruled that his arrest and detainment was illegal.
Speaking to journalists, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hussein Mirre Giirre, confirmed Abiib’s release, stating that the move followed the court’s ruling.
“I can confirm that I have regained my freedom. I thank everyone who sympathized with me during the 30 days I was illegally detained in Mandera prison,” The MP said on a social media post.
Abiib’s arrest had sparked widespread condemnation from the Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives and opposition parties, who labelled it a violation of the constitution.
He was arrested at Hargeisa’s Egal Airport upon his return from the United Arab Emirates, facing accusations of treason, defaming the military, aiding the “enemy,” and opposing national interests.
