HARGEISA (Halbeeg News) – Somaliland’s main opposition political party, Wadani has welcomed the decision reached by the House of the Senate to extend the time frame for the parliament and the local council.
The House of the Senate approved nine months’ extension for the current Parliament during special sitting on January 21st of January 2019.
The party said in a statement that it has accepted the move by the House while putting into consideration the best interest of the nation as far as the democratic development process is concerned.
“Wadani party welcomes the decision by the house of the Senate to extend the time frame for the parliament on 21st January to 12th January 2019,” the statement reads in part, “The government should put in place all necessary measures for conducting free and fair parliamentary elections without delay.”
The move follows the postponement of the parliamentary elections for the fifth time in a row although it is now slated for December this year.
The announcement by Wadani party came shortly after the arrival of its chair, Abdulrahman Iro from his one week visit to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi where he met representatives of the international community.
