The breakaway Somaliland has slammed Somali prime minister, Hassan Ali Kheire’s statement over the tripartite agreement between Somaliland, Ethiopia and DP world to manage Berbera Port.
The region’s Information minister, Abdirahman Abdullahi Farah said the deal was legitimate one in accordance with Somaliland constitution.
“Article 90 of Somaliland constitution articulates that Somaliland has the right to sign an agreement with partner. Let Kheire unite the districts of Mogadishu,” Farah mocked the prime minister’s sentiment.
He dismissed the deal being new one saying signatories have only completed the previous pact.
Farah’s comment comes just a day after Somali federal government dismissed the deal as null and void citing that it was in no way involved in the pact.
“The so-called agreement is both defective and detrimental to the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The ministry, therefore, considering the above declares this deal as non-existent null and void” Somalia’s Ministry for Ports and Marine Transport challenged the legality of the deal.
Somalia’s Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire who returned from United Arab Emirates reiterated the government’s position.
“I want inform Somali people that the federal government has no knowledge of the deal of Berbera port. As you have seen in the previous statement released by the ministry of Ports under the permission of the prime minister, the position of the government is clear,” statement from the office Kheire reads in part.
The tripartite agreement gives Somaliland, Ethiopia and DP World 30%, 19% and 51% stakes respectively.
The signing of the deal which took place in United Arab Emirates coincided with the prime minister’s state visit to Abu Dhabi.
