HARGEISA (Halbeeg News) – Somaliland has issued directive banning broadcasts by Somali National Television (SNTV) from its regions.
In a statement issued, Somaliland minister for Information, Mohamed M. Diriye said the ministry has blocked the national television from its cable networks to stop it from spreading the news about Somalia.
The ministry asked premium pay Service Televisions to remove SNTV from the host channel list.
“Somaliland Information ministry completely ban (people in Somaliland) from watching SNTV programs, it ordered the channel to be removed from the lists pay service TVs managed by True Cable Tv, Astaan Cable TV and Hornset Cable TV,” the statement reads in part.
The ban comes less than a week after shut down two privately-owned TV stations in Hargeisa.
In a letter addressed to the channels, Somaliland Ministry for Information accused Eryal and Horyal 24 of airing anti-Somaliland Army news, propaganda against security and fueling conflict within the community, claims dismissed by the channels.
“We are shocked to hear all these fabricated allegations. We are independent media and our role is to inform the public through factual reporting so I don’t understand why the government is alleging us on these things,” Mohamed Osman Mire (Sayid) of Horyaal 24 TV told the media.
