The law enforcement agencies in the breakaway Somaliland have arrested a local journalist in the disputed region of Sool, Somali media watchdog confirmed.
Adam Jama’a Ogle was arrested after police raided his home following an order from Sool governor, Abdi Hayre Dirir.
National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has expressed concern over the detention of the journalist.
“National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ is dismayed by the arbitrary arrest and continued detention of a local journalist by the Somaliland police in Las Anod town,” reads the statement by the body.
According to a local journalist, Adam Jama Ogle who is a freelance journalist was detained due to a Facebook post in which he said the people in the region are supporting the unity of Somalia, and this post infuriated Somaliland official.
Sool regional administration reportedly called on Ogle’s family and demanded the family to writes a guarantee that the journalist will not publish such posts again but the family refused as it may be an attempt to restrict Ogle.
NUSOJ called on Somaliland authorities to stop constant crackdown of journalists who exercise their right to expression freely.
Previously, Ogle has worked for Radio Las Anod before he decided to work as a freelance journalist.
