MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s newly appointed police chief, Sulub Ahmed Firin has today assumed office.
In a ceremony held in Mogadishu, Gen. Abdi Hassan Hijar handed over the office to Gen. Farin who previously served as deputy aviation minister. Hijar has been serving post this post since August 2019.
The police boss has pledged to reform law enforcement and improve the security of the capital.
“I work on improving the skills of the police and increasing the training of the police. We will focus on security, the fight against gangs, armed bandits, drug trafficking and anything else that could lead to insecurity,” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama, Minister of State for Security Mohamed Ali Hagaa, police officers and other guests attended the colourful event.
The reshuffle of the police leadership came as al-Shabaab increased attacks in Mogadishu.
Last month, the group attacked the headquarters of the Mogadishu administration with explosions before heavily armed men entered the premises.
About four hour-long fight clashes with the security forces, five attackers and a civilian were killed in the raid. Over 10 others were wounded.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting to topple the Somali government since 2016.
With the military support of troops mostly contributed to neighbouring countries including Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti, the Somali government succeeded in recovering large territories from al-Shabaab in the south and central Somalia.
The government also claimed to have killed thousands of group’s fighter in months long operations which commenced last July.
