MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia on Wednesday celebrated World Post Day by vowing to renovate its postal services which collapsed decades ago.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Mogadishu, Abdi Ashur Hassan, Somali Minister for Post, Telecom & Technology said the country will soon be able to re-establish sending and receiving international mail systems.
The minister confirmed the mail operations will be started before the end of 2019, terming the move a major milestone to resume one of the ministry’s pillars.
“The ministry is working to make sure the postal service regains its lost glory and become the preferred logistics, e-government and payment services provider in Somalia,” Hassan said.
He underscored that the Post Office remains relevant in this digital age as technology complements the postal services
“Without postal services, things look complicated and this country needs the resumption of postal operations,” he said.
Somalia became a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the UN specialized body for postal services before the body imposed sanctions on Somalia following the outbreak of the civil war in 1990.
Following long struggle by successive governments, Somalia rejoined Universal Postal Union in last April.
Regaining of its membership, UPU’s 192 member countries to resume sending mail to Somalia once the arrangements are finalized.
