MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Officials from Somali and US governments have met in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Tuesday to discuss joint anti-terrorism measures, particularly against the al-Shabaab group.
While meeting the US Interim and Charge d’Affaires Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Shane Dixon, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre thanked the United States government for their continued support to Somalia in the security, development, and humanitarian sectors.
The Prime Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to eradicating the Al-Shabaab militants and restoring peace and stability in Somalia.
PM Hamza underlined the commitment of the Government of the efforts to eradicate the militiamen and in general to rid the country of the groups that are preventing the peace and development of the Somali people.
On his part, Ambassador Dixon praised the Somali Government for accelerating the war against the Al-Shabaab and the plans related to the priority programs for the Somali government.
The development comes as Somali government preparing to launch the second phase of operations to liberate all areas under al-Shabaab control.
Early this year, Somalia, and its neighbours (Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Kenya) agreed to conduct a significant joint military offensive against Al-Shabaab dubbed “Operation Black Lion” to liberate remaining territories under the militants’ control to not only stabilise the Horn of Africa country but also secure the region.
The agreement was reached at a summit hosted by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and attended by the Heads of State of Kenya, Djibouti, and Ethiopia.
