MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – The Federal Government of Somalia will start the renovation of more than ten canals in a bid to avert recurring flood effects in the country.
The project which will be implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture will see the canals mainly situated in Middle and Lower Shabelle regions upgraded.
“We have already completed Birimo Sugundaariyo canal and planning the other ten in respective Middle and Shabelle regions soon.” Minister for Agriculture, Saed Hussein Eid told the Somali National News Agency (SONNA).
The Minister also noted that overwhelming sand in the river and the diversion of water from the river by the farmers as the main cause of the recent flooding resulted in the displacement of people and destruction of property in parts of the country.
“The diversion of water by terror groups for defense and huge piles of sand that was not removed in years is causing flooding.” The Minister said.
Experts have called for durable solutions to control the frequent flooding in the country.
The city of Beledweyne in Hiran region was hit worst affected after the river burst its banks following torrential rains.
More than 20 people have killed among them government officials whose boat capsized while on a rescue mission in Hiiran region.
