Puntland State in Somalia’s Northeastern part will on Friday host first Somali Technology Fair since 1990 when the country’s central government collapsed.
The fair which will run for two days is intended to showcase Somalia’s technology and innovation and provide funds, networking and mentoring opportunities for tech startups in the country.
In a statement, Puntland Technology Development Agency (PTDA) said the event which will be held in Puntland State University in Garowe town brings together over 500 delegates drawn from different parts of Somalia.
Heads of states, ministers, innovators, entrepreneurs, private sector institutions and civil society will be among the attendees, according to the Agency.
The fair will discuss strategies and solutions to attract investors in the sector which is the fastest growing sector in the country.
It also seeks to create a platform for academic presentations.
The social event comes on the heel of last week’s Mogadishu mini-marathon which was held in Mogadishu for the first time in over 25 years with over 500 youth athletes.
Somalia whose population is mostly youth had last year launched its first community-based tech innovation hub dubbed iRise.
The hub promotes and offers a conducive environment which creates a platform to share ideas, collaborations, support and interactions to entrepreneurs, innovators, developers, investors, techies and startups.
