Somalia to hold presidential election early Oct

MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s parliamentary elections will be held between August 10th and September 10^th followed presidential election which is slated for 10^th of October this year, office of the prime minister said Tuesday.

Following two days of talks between Somali prime minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble and regional state, the office of the PM announced timetable of the upcoming elections with that of Upper House lawmakers to take place on July 25.

The list of the clan electoral delegates will however be submitted between 15^th July and 10^th August before submitted their names to the poll agency.

According election agreement by the federal and regional state leaders on 27^th of May, Somalia was to hold its parliamentary and presidential elections within two months and would have correspond to August.

On 20^th of this month, Somalia formed federal and state-level electoral teams.

According to PM office, the Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET) is made up of 25 individuals while the Federal Dispute Resolution Mechanism comprises 21 members.

The teams will oversee the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The office of the PM also formed two federal and state-level electoral security teams.

In Security Plan developed by the Office of the Prime Minister, Roble drew the members mainly from the Somali Police Force and African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).

The teams will be in charge of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

The first team which is National Elections Security Committee (NESC) will be headed by prime minister Roble.

The NESC will be tasked with the security of Presidential elections which will happen in Mogadishu but also work closely with the state-level security committees.

Elections for the Banaadiri community and Somaliland both of which will happen in Mogadishu will be secured by the Banaadir Regional Electoral Security Working Group.

A committee of Federal Member State police commanders will lead the State Election Security Working Committee (SEWC).

SEWC will have members from civil society organisations, the state police force, the Darawish paramilitary unit and the Somali National Army head among others.
