MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – Immunization exercise to curb polio outbreaks is expected to kick off in Somalia later this month.
The two rounds vaccination is set to deliver monovalent oral vaccine type two in sustaining polio resistance and protection in response to the outbreaks of two strains of poliovirus currently in circulation according to health records.
The first round will kick off from June 23 to 26 whereas the face two is set the following month of July from 21 to 24, this year.
Puntland and Somaliland regions will be the first to benefit from the vaccination.
Children under the age of five will be targeted in oral health protection.
More than three million Somali children were vaccinated in March this year.
The pastoralist nature of Somali people and migration in search of water and pastures across the borders neighboring states exposes them to high risk of contracting the disease.
Polio related health complications remain a major risk among Somali children.
The WHO estimates the Global Polio Eradication Initiative has saved 10 million children from paralysis
Poliomyelitis, an infectious viral disease, commonly called polio, causes temporary or permanent paralysis.
