Somalia’s state minister for trade, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed alias Lafta gareen has resigned from his portfolio.
In a bid for the position of Lower House speaker, Lafta Gareen said he made the decision to step down following the statement by the oversight commission.
Speaking during press conference in Mogadishu said he was responding to the request by the committee calling for the resignation of ministers who are for vying for the post of the speaker.
“I hereby vacate the office of the State Minister for trade of the Federal Government of Somalia, my name will be on the ballot paper for the office of speaker of the Parliament,” he said.
The decision of the minister follows the statement by the parliamentary election committee directing the ministers vying for speaker to resign before contesting for the speaker of the parliament.
“Any candidate vying for the office of the speaker, who is also a member of the cabinet should hand over the resignation letters before the committee during the resignation,” said the committee in a statement issued on Sunday.
Among other MPs who showed interest in the position are ministers for Defense and Water Ministers, Mohamed Mursal Sheikh and Salim Ibrow.
The two ministers are yet to give comment on the statement of the committee organizing the election of the speaker.
The election of the speaker will be held on 30th this month after the former speaker; Mohamed Osman Jawari vacated the office following a month-long dispute.
