Fifteen Somali national released Zimbabwean jails have arrived in the Somali capital, state media reported.
Since early 2017, over 300 Somali nationals were freed from jails of several countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Seychelles and India after Somali initiated efforts to release them.
SONNA quoting Somalia’s ambassador to Zimbabwe said the prisoners have been repatriated after they were released Harare Remand Prison.
“The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to South Africa and the Non-Resident Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr. Jamal Mohamed Barrow, held successful talks with officials of the Zimbabwean government after visiting the prison,” the agency reported.
The Indian Muslim community living in Zimbabwe have paid the return tickets for the 15 Somalis, according to SONNA.
The repatriated nationals were arrested in November last year by Zimbabwe security forces for staying illegally in Zimbabwe.
Seven other Somali nationals who are in Zimbabwe jails will be released soon as talks between the governments of Somalia and Zimbabwe is underway.
Early this week, Four Somali nationals were released from Kenyan jails after serving 10 years jail terms.
In December, 114 Somalis were released from Ethiopian detention facilities and handed over to the Somali government following talks between Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre and his then Ethiopian counterpart, Hailemariam Desalegn.
