MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia has rejected a resolution by African Union to condemn the move by Somalia’s lower house members to extend government term.
In a press conference on Saturday, Somali information minister, Osman Abukar Dubbe said the continental body has no authority to reject decision by the people’s representatives.
Somalia has further expressed dismay at article 12 of the Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) communique which requests AU forces to “monitor” deployment of Somali forces saying the move is “illegal” and offends the dignity and pride of Somali forces.
The development comes barely two days after AUPSC’s communique asked African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) to monitor the deployment of Somali Security Forces (SSF).
The continental body opposed condemned actions of the Lower House of Parliament to extend mandate of Somali government, saying move effectively delayed elections, undermined unity and stability of the country.
AUPSC met last Thursday to discuss how best the pan African body can support Somalis to break the political stalemate to pave way for elections.
The bloc called for resumption of talks on the basis of Sept 17 agreement, noting that the move to delay election in the horn of Africa nation would undermine the important gains that country has made over the years with the support of the AU and other partners with huge sacrifices.
