MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia has started rebuilding the country’s National Theatre which suffered extensive damage during the civil war.
The theatre is expected to revive its long-defunct operation, a move symbolises the restoration of peace.
Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo today laid the foundation of the construction of the theatre.
“Today, the president has laid foundation stone of the construction of the National,” said the spokesperson of the President, Abdinur Mohamed Ahmed told the media.
Through ISXILQAN (Self-help) program, the construction of theatre is expected to be completed in a course less than a year.
“The president has pledged the construction to be completed the construction shortly in one year.” Mr. Ahmed said.
The national serves as an important cultural landmark in the national capital.
The institution closed down after the start of the civil war in the early 1990s but was later intermittently renovated by the local authorities.
The building of the National Theatre of Somalia was built by Chinese engineers 1962 just two after Somalia gained from Italy and Britain.
The institution which was finished was officially opened in 1967.
