MOGADISHU (HalbeegNews) – Somalia has retained the dubious honour of being the world’s top media offender country for journalists for the fourth consecutive year ranking.
Impunity is entrenched in 14 nations, according to CPJ’s 2018 Global Impunity Index, which ranks states with the worst records of prosecuting the killers of journalists.
Somalia topped the list for the fourth year in a row and two countries rejoin the list of offenders, including Afghanistan.
The report ranked Somalia the most dangerous country with 25 unsolved cases where journalists are slain and their killers go free.
This year alone, three journalists were killed by unidentified assailants with no arrests made yet.
The report comes on the heel of a call by Somali Madia Watch to protect the fourth estate members.
Late last month, unidentified gunmen killed Abdullahi Mire Hashi, radio journalist on the outskirt of Somali Mogadishu.
Nobody has been arrested in connection to the murder of the journalist.
The National Union of Somalia Journalists (NUSOJ) has urged the Somali government to carry out efforts to arrest the perpetrators of the heinous attacks against Somali journalists.
Abdullahi Mire is the third journalist murdered in Somalia this year.
On July 26, Abdirisak Kasim of SBS TV was shot and killed by a policeman at a checkpoint in Mogadishu.
On September 19, Abdirisak Saed of radio Codka Nabada (Voice of Peace), died in Galkaio of injuries sustained in a knife attack but to date, the perpetrators of that attack were not brought to justice.
