As Millions of people across the world today celebrate “World Happiness Day” Somalia attained the glory of being the happiest country in East and central Africa, a new report shows.
Ranked at 98 globally in the 2018, World Happiness Report released by the United Nations on 14th this month, Somalia was positioned at 6th happiest in the continent followed by two countries whose GDPs are much higher than Somalia, Cameroon and South Africa.
Unlike other countries, the report does not based the happiness of our nation on GDP, health and life expectancy but sense of generosity, social support and happiness and Patience are the factor that influence the researchers to place Somalia at the 98 globally and Sixth in the continental rank.
Our neighbours, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti are distant to Somalia, as they were ranked 115th, 122th and 105th in the worldwide rank.
Somalis who are Sunni Muslim have been inspired by the Islamic culture in spite of having endured political crisis, drought and clan clashes since 1990s.
Despite leading the region this year, the country moved backed from its position in 2017 which was fifth.
The ranking, which is based on factors such as GDP per capita, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and public trust, among others, had selected Mauritius as the first country in the continent.
Globally, Finland moved into the top spot as the happiest country in the world, followed by Denmark and Norway.
Tanzania, South Africa, Central African republic (CAR) and Burundi are the unhappiest countries in the entire world.
The International Happiness Day is celebrated on 20th March every year.
