MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia has dismissed media reports that it was lobbying for the mandate extension of the African Union Transition Mission (Atmis).
Somalia’s presidential advisor on security Hussein Sheikh Ali who spoke to the media said the country was putting more effort into taking over security responsibilities as the mandate of the mission is coming to an end.
“This is untrue reporting. The Federal Government of Somalia is committed to taking responsibility for security in Somalia from ATMIS as it mandated UNSC resolutions 2628 and 2670 by the 31st of December 2024,” Ali said.
The remarks of Ali come days after The East African, a local newspaper based in Nairobi reported that Somalia is willing to prolong the stay of the regional force, signalling the challenge of beating down Al-Shabaab.
The mission has less than 20 months before its mandate come to an end.
