MOGADISHU(Halbeeg News)– Events aimed to mark the national teachers’ day are held across the country as higher institutions of Somalia have gained momentum.
During the celebration of the day, the participants will focus on the achievements and highlight the challenges faced by education sector around the country.
Teachers, students and other academics are taking part in today’s celebrations of teachers day held at all major towns of Somalia.
In 1974, the central government led by late Mohamed Siyad Barre has designated 21st November every year as the teachers day.
The government and the people of Somalia equally celebrate the importance and weight of the day to the development and the prosperity of the society.
According to UNESCO, more than 250 million young people are still out of schools around the world and to meet the organizations’ 2030 targets, around 69 million new teachers need to be recruited globally so as to fill the gap.
The education gap is most pronounced among more vulnerable demographics, with girls, children with disabilities, refugees and children living in poverty disproportionately affected.
Speaking at the event, the Education state minister of Somalia’s federal government, Abdirahman Mohamud Jabir praised the work of Somali teachers who he said had supported Somali children during hard times when Somalia was in civil war.
“Today is an important day, it is a day that has value to Somali people, it is the day of Somali teacher. There is no other day which has a similar value that is celebrated” said the minister.
“ I send congratulations to all teachers wherever they are, if there was no teacher, we couldn’t have reached where we are today and the development we are celebrating for” he added.
Mr. Jabir urged the teachers to double their efforts of building the brains and the awareness of Somali children who are the assets of Somali people.
