MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia has marked the 59th anniversary of Independence from the Italian colony as well as the union of south and the northern parts of the country on Friday.
As the clock ticked midnight in Somalia, the blue flag with a five-pointed star was raised at the local government headquarters in Mogadishu with thousands of fireworks light up the sky over the seaside city.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led other senior government officials to mark the occasion at as the head of state presided over colorful ceremony before receiving guard of honor from Somalia’s armed forces.
Somalis from all walks of life have marched across their country to celebrate the Independence Day.
President Mohamud graced the occasion sent his heartfelt cheerful congratulation to Somali people wherever they are to this independent day that comes 63 years later.
Over six decades down the line, the country is still facing a wide variety of challenges- on top of them Al-Shabab, poverty, Secessionist Somaliland.
Northern regions of Somalia (now Somaliland) declared secession in1991 after Somalia’s central government was toppled.
The region which succeeded to restore peace has held parliamentary and presidential elections. But the region failed to gain international recognition.
