MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – Somalia has marked the 59th anniversary of Independence from the Italian colony as well as the union of south and the northern parts of the country on Sunday.
President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo led other senior government officials to mark the occasion at Konis stadium in Mogadishu.
The head of state presided over colorful ceremony before receiving guard of honor from Somalia’s armed forces.
In his brief speech, the President urged the citizens to be patriotic in order to serve the nation.
Farmajo particularly called upon the young people to play key role in the stabilization of the nation and follow the path of forefathers that bravely fought for the independence of the horn of the African state.
Similar events were held across major cities in Somalia mainly the capital of the regional state administrations.
Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Kheyre was in Dhusamareb where he led the independence ceremony together with Galmudug regional state leaders.
Somali flag was first hosted in Hargeysa on 1st July 1960 as sign of independence from Italian and British colonies as well as symbol of unity of Somali nation.
