MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia has today marked the 4th anniversary of the deadliest bombing in history which occurred in Mogadishu.
A truck loaded with 1200kg bomb drove into afternoon traffic in Mogadishu’s Zobe junction, killing over 500 and maiming close to 700 others.
It also destroyed property running into millions of dollars.
The bomb was reportedly set to hit the UN compound in Mogadishu.
The US and the UN expressed solidarity with Somalis who are commemorating the deadliest bombing in Mogadishu.
“On the fourth anniversary of the appalling 14 October attack, we remember the victims and their families, and stand in solidarity with Somalia in the fight against terrorism,” the US embassy said in a tweet.
The UN in Somalia also said it stands in solidarity with Somalia in marking the fourth anniversary of the deadly bombing.
“As Somalis mark today the fourth anniversary of the Mogadishu bombings of 14 October 2017 which caused so much suffering and devastation, the UN family in Somalia remembers the victims and the injured, and stands in solidarity with all Somalis.”
Al-Shabaab which was blamed for the attack did not claim responsibility for the bombing
Hassan Adan Isak, who was convicted involving in the deadliest bomb attack in Somalia’s history was executed by a firing squad on the first anniversary of the blast.
