MANDERA (Halbeeg News) – Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya 2hoch all share borders have launched a new project aims to reopen the official border crossings between the three countries.
The borders between the countries have been partially or fully closed in recent years due to security issues.
The launching of the project which aims to back Ethiopia-Somalia border peace efforts was attended by Somalia Internal Security Minister Mohamed Sheikh Ali, Ethiopia Peace Minister Binalf Andualem and Jubaland Deputy President Mohamud Sayid Aden, Kenya Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, and Kenya Interior CS Kithure Kindiki,
In attendance was also Outgoing British High Commissioner Jane Marriot.
The project is being implemented by the three countries in collaboration with the British government.
Somalia Internal Security Minister Mohamed Sheikh Ali said the project is timely and will effectively tackle cross-border insecurity challenges.
“And in that spirit of collective solidarity, there has never been a better time to forge common destiny and collectively participate in this project to tackle cross-border challenges,” Sheikh said.
Gachagua said the initiative was timely and would receive full backing from Kenya.
“It is a pragmatic and sustainable approach to the socio-economic challenges the region has grappled with for decades,” he said. “As the government of Kenya, we are confident that it will contribute to the ongoing peace and stability efforts and improve the social economic status of the borderlands people.”
Marriott said Britain will continue to support the Borderlands Project and programmes geared towards long-lasting peace and development in the region.
“The three countries do not just share a common border but the communities living here share a common history and destiny and face common challenges,” the envoy said.
“There is so much positive shared by the communities that this project will help to expand.”
