MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Thousands of Somalis displaced by drought in Somalia will get aid support thanks to $45 million aid support provided by the World Bank.
According to agreement signed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Ministry of Public Works and Reconstruction, the funds will be used to support Internally displaced persons in Mogadishu, Garowe and Baidoa town.
Through the ongoing Somalia Urban Resilience Project Phase II (SURP-II), the funds will be administered by IOM.
This new funding is in addition to the World Bank’s earlier emergency drought response worth USD$ 20 million that was also provided Under the SURP-II. The agreement was signed in Mogadishu on April 2, 2023, by Honorable Ismail Abdirahman Sheikh Bashir, the federal minister for Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, and the IOM Chief of Mission, Mr. Frantz Celestin.
IOM, on behalf of the federal government, will be providing much needed nutrition and health services along with shelter support, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, and multi-purpose cash transfer for the newly arriving IDPs.
