Somali Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Issa Awad on Monday addressed the participants of 18th Extraordinary AU Session on African Continental Free Trade area which is scheduled to start in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Minister had commended the efforts of the leaders of the continent to come up with the project saying the initiative would restore the continent’s economy.
“The African Continental Free Trade area will revive Africa’s economy and strengthen the continent’s status to solve its internal problems,” said Awad during his speech at the AU foreign ministers’ session in Kigali.
He pointed out that the new bloc would improve the interaction between the African communities in the continent.
The Trade Area which one of the flagship projects of Agenda 2063 aims at deepening the integration process by allowing people to trade and move freely across the continent.
The project is also being drive forward along with key related initiatives including Single African Air Transport Market.
AU heads of state are expected to meet on 21st March in Kigali over the new trade bloc.
The African Continental Free Trade area is making quick progress despite earlier setbacks.
The Presidents of Nigeria and Uganda, Muhammadu Buhari and Yoweri Museveni respectively have rebuffed the move, calling for further internal discussions.
