MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – The Somali government is holding talks with some of the European countries to recognize the passport of the horn of African country.
Somali government has been struggling to convince the world countries to accept Somali passport for visa and as a genuine travel document.
Speaking to the media, Somalia’s ambassador to Belgium, Ali Said Fiqi of Somalia confirmed that Somali government is in talks with several EU countries including Netherlands and Sweden.
The ambassador pointed out that the government is committed to convince to accept the Somali passport.
“We held talks with several countries in Europe, we have already convinced a number of countries, including Belgium, for no,w Belgium recognised Somali diplomatic and service passports,” he said.
He said the governments of Netherlands and Sweden have expressed their willingness to recognise Somali travel documents.
“There are ongoing talks between the Somali government and two European countries which are Netherlands and Sweden to recognise Somali passport,” he said.
On Monday, the government of Belgium officially recognised Somalia’s passport for the first time since the country plunged into civil war in the 1990s.
In a Twitter post, Belgium embassy in Nairobi announced that the European country will accept diplomatically and service passport of the horn of African nation.
Somali embassy in Brussels which was reopened in 2014 became the first Somali-owned diplomatic compound in the outside world to be rebuilt since the horn of African country fell into anarchy in January 1991.
