MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government has invited dozens of Somali diasporas to attend an annual diaspora conference in Mogadishu.
The government seeking to tap investment opportunities from its citizens abroad. The conference aims to encourage Somali citizens living abroad to invest in the country and make tangible contributions to the country’s reconstruction.
The conference was attended by ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia, members of both houses of Parliament, civil society representatives, and members of the Somali diaspora.
Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abshir Omar Jama emphasized the significant role played by the diaspora in the reconstruction of the country. He acknowledged that the diaspora has diverse needs and that finding solutions to address these needs is crucial.
“Somali diaspora communities play a crucial role in Somali livelihoods through remittances, humanitarian assistance, and participation in reconstruction efforts,” said Jama.
The conference will focus on discussing how the Somali diaspora can play an important role in building the Somali government, contributing to the economy, and addressing the needs of the diaspora community.
The discussions aim to identify ways to strengthen the engagement and contribution of the Somali diaspora in the development of their homeland.
Jama said the diaspora community has made a lot of contributions in terms of the development of Somalia despite numerous challenges they are facing abroad including securing proper documentation to legalize their stay.
“These individuals face various challenges, including healthcare and financial issues, as well as the inability to return to their home country due to prevailing circumstances,” Omar said.
