MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – Somalia has exported 14 tons of locally produced Banana to Turkey.
This is the second shipment of the fruit to the international market following the shipping of the first consignment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia weeks ago.
According to the Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nur Yusuf Nur, the country received requests of supply of agricultural products from various international markets.
He said the move will help farmers increase their productivity and ensure the quality of international standards.
On his part, the state Minister for Trade and Industries, Dahir Abdi Abdullahi said the export of Somali Banana to potential buyers is a step forward to balance the import and export products to reduce the trade deficit.
USAID project dubbed Growth Enterprise, Employment and Livelihood (GEEL) is helping Somali farmers acquire new farming skills on Banana farming.
Under GEEL project Somali farmers were airlifted to Costa Rica to learn new techniques on Banana production.
Somalia was one of the leading Banana exporters in the world before the break out of the civil war in the country nearly three decades ago.
Ecuador is currently the largest exporter of bananas in the world and its share of world banana trade is on the increase.
