Mogadishu (Halbeeg News) – The federal government of Somalia has expelled a senior Ethiopian diplomat whom it accuses of engaging in activities that violates Somalia’s sovereignty.
According to Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ali Mohamed Adan, who served as Counselor II at the Ethiopian Embassy in Mogadishu, was given 72 hours to leave the country.
“The Ministry announces that Mr. Ali Mohamed Adan, currently serving as Counselor II at the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Somalia, has engaged in activities incompatible with his diplomatic role,” reads a statement from the ministry.
Adding, “As a result, Mr. Ali Mohamed Adan has been declared persona non grata and is required to depart Somalia within 72 hours of receiving this notice.”
The press release referenced the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), highlighting Articles 41 and 42, which “mandate diplomats to respect the laws of the host nation and abstain from involvement in its internal affairs.”
The Ministry stated this decision underscores Somalia’s commitment to “protecting its sovereignty and adhering to international law.”
The expulsion marks an escalation of tension between the two countries whose relations have continued to worsen over territorial disputes, shifting alliances, and Somalia’s renewed assertiveness over its internal affairs.
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to respond to these accusations.
