MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia has condemned Taiwan’s recent move to open new representative office in Hargeisa town northern Somalia.
In a strong worded statement on Tuesday, Somali foreign ministry termed the launching of office as reckless attempt to infringe on the sovereignty of Somalia and violate its territorial integrity.
“The federal government of Somalia repudiates such misguided endeavours that seek to sow discord and division among our people,” the statement reads in part.
The Horn of Africa nation called on Taiwan authorities to the sovereignty of Somalia.
“Somalia therefore calls on Taiwan to cease its misinformed ventures into any part of the territory of the federal republic of Somalia. These principal are non-negotiable to the Federal government of Somalia,” the ministry said.
The development comes barely a day after Taiwan opened ‘diplomatic’ office in Somaliland which it said would bolster relations of the sides
The office which they called ‘representative’ was opened in Somaliland capital Hargeisa Sunday close to two months after both Hargeisa and Taipei announced start of diplomatic engagements.
The opening ceremony was attended by senior officials in Somaliland while Taiwan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Wu joined via teleconference.
