Mogadishu (Halbeeg News) – Backed by international partners, Somali forces killed more than 160 members of al-Shabaab, the country’s Information Ministry said.
In a statement, Somali Minister of Information, Daud Aweys Jama said at least 160 al-Shabaab fighters in the recent weeks’ security operation in Galmudug, Hirshabelle and Southwest Regional States.
According to the ministry, the joint forces killed 100 al-Shabaab fighters in the border area between Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions.
The government forces also neutralized 60 others in Goofgaduud Bureey, which lies 30km west of Baidoa.
The development comes as the Somali government is planning to launch the second phase of operations against al-Shabaab in south and southwestern Somalia
The operations dubbed Black Lion are expected to jointly conduct by Somali forces, clan militias as well as troops from the neighbouring countries.
Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti which all have troops working under the framework of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis) have accepted to help the Horn of Africa nation carry out the operations against al-Shabaab.
