Mogadishu (Halbeeg) – Somali today marks 58th anniversary of Independence of the country’s northern region after gaining independence from Britain.
Before 1960, Somalia was divided by colonial powers – the British controlled the northern protectorate of Somaliland, while the Italians were in charge of what is now the Federal Republic of Somalia.
On 26th June 1960, Somaliland gained independence from Britain following decades of colonization.
The Federal Government of Somalia has prepared events for the D Day across the nation.
In the country’s capital city, Mogadishu, well-orchestrated ceremony was on Monday hosted at Mogadishu Local Headquarters with President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo presiding.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Farmajo congratulated the Somali people on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the independence of the Northern regions.
“Our freedom which we are enjoying today was gained through blood and wealth, today is a victory that began in the 1960s when the north and south joined and become united, that victory was one of the nation’s leading causes of Somalism and unity,” said President Farmajo.

Meanwhile, Somali National Army (SNA), local authorities, civil society members, ministers, and lawmakers last night gathered at Lama-galay Military Base in Beledweyne town to mark 58 anniversary of the Independence.
Speaking at the event, Hiiraan Governor, Abdullahi Ahmed Moalim congratulated Somalis on the 58th of the independence.
“I’d like to congratulate all Somali people, everywhere, on the 58th anniversary of our independence. Many have sacrificed themselves for the freedom we have today,” Moalim said.

Five days later after the northern region gained independence, the southern region secured their independence from Italy and subsequently the two former colonies united as the United Republic of Somalia.
The merger of the two regions marked the birth of the Republic of Somalia on July 1, 1960.
Every July Somalia marks the unity day of the two Somali regions, former British Somaliland Protectorate and Southern Somalia under Italian rule
