Somali government has called on the UN Security Council to take necessary steps against United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its blatant violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia.
Addressing UN Security Council, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to UN, Abukar Osman accused UAE of signing back door deals with Somaliland without the consent of the Federal Government.
“Two years ago, United Arab Emirates signed an agreement with Somaliland Regional Authorities to establish UAE military base in Berbera without the consent of the Federal Government” said Osman.
Citing the report by Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group ( S/2017/924) Osman said the Emirates government went further to break the embargo on Somalia.
“The report of Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group confirmed that the construction of the facilities is underway,” he noted “The group further stated the establishment of a foreign military base in Berbera involving the transfer of military materials to the territory, would constitute a violation of the arms embargo on Somalia” he stressed.
The ambassador underscored the government’s commitment to take measures to secure Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Somali government strongly condemns these blatant violations and reaffirms that it will take the necessary measures deriving from its primary responsibilities to defend in the inviolability of the sovereignty and the unity of Somalia in accordance with Somali constitution and International law and covenant,” vowed the envoy.
