A delegation led by Somalia’s civil aviation minister, Mohamed Omaar has reached flood-hit Beledweyne town.
The town has been inundated with heavy floods following torrential rains.
The minister and his delegates were received by Hiran region authorities and elders.
Omaar accompanied by the governor of Hiran region, Abdullahi Ahmed Moalim toured the runaway of Ugas Khalif airport which was submerged by floods.
The minister who held meeting the local authorities has pledged the reconstruction of the airport.
“As Federal Government, we will make sure the reconstruction of the airport will embark soon so for it to resume its operation,” said Omaar.
Departure and arrival flights at the Airport have been suspended two months ago after floodwaters washed away from town’s highland areas have submerged the airport’s runaway.
There is no proper sewage in the airport making it vulnerable to floods.
Prior to the floods, Hirshabelle state has taken initiatives to improve the standard of the airport which had not been refurbished since the fall of Somalia’s central government in the 1990s.
The airport which is located in the outskirt of the town is surrounded by ranges of hills that pour floods to the airport during the rainy seasons.
