MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government appointed seven-member board to lead the country’s petroleum regulator.
In a statement the Somali Petroleum Authority (SPA) on Wednesday named seven board members who were drawn from the Federal government and its member states.
According to the statement, the members were appointed in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Act.
“The Board will oversee all the SPA’s activities to ensure that it develops a sustainable and competitive industry in the interests of all Somali people, in keeping with its mandate,” the authority said.
Among the appointed are Aisha Osman Ahmed Benefit region representativethe who will deputise chairperson of regulator, Abdulkadir Aden Mohamud (Galmudug), Ahmed Haji Abdi (Jubbaland), Ibrahim Ahmed Layte representing HirShabelle, Abdihafid Ali Dirir (Somaliland) and Mahad Mohamed Hassan will represent the Federal Government.
The statement notes that the Board will ensure that the regulatory and fiscal regime being developed will apply the principles of equality, openness, accountability, transparency and non-discrimination in the interests of all the Somali people.
Somalia’s cabinet approved the board members of the Somali Petroleum Authority (SPA) on last July.
The ministry for petroleum has Ibrahim Ali Hussein as the SPA’s first chairman.
Prior to the appointment, He had been the senior economic advisor to The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources since November 2014, where he developed the regulatory and commercial framework for the oil and gas industry.
In February this year, the country rectified petroleum law which paves the way for the SPA to be the government authority to regulate the development of the industry.
It is designed to apply the principles of equality, openness, accountability, transparency and non-discrimination in the interests of all the Somali people, according to the ministry.
