MOGADISHU ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The Federal Republic of Somalia and The Republic of Italy jointly signed a flood control agreement on Saturday.
Rome will provide six million Euro initiatives for Shabelle river flood control and agricultural development in Beledweyne city of the Hiran region that was devastated by recurrent floods.
The three phases project will kick off with the construction of dams, the maintenance of canals, and the strengthening of flood defenses.
The agreement was signed in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mahdi Mohamed Gulaid, and Agriculture Minister Said Hussein Eid together with Alberto Vecchi, the Italian Ambassador to Somalia, and Guglielmo Giordano, the head of the Italian Development Agency.
The initiative will be implemented by the Food and Agricultural Office in the country in collaboration with all the concerned authorities and stakeholders.
The Assistant Minister of Agriculture said that the project is of great importance to the areas along the Shabelle River that are causing floods and property damage, thanking the Italian government for its support.
