MOGADISHU ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of France have agreed to activate all channels in boosting already existing diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The pledge was made during the meeting between Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohamud Siraji, and the Ambassador of the French Republic to the Federal Republic of Somalia Aline Kuster-Menager in Mogadishu.
The two discussed deepening relations and cooperation between the two countries while also strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in a way that serves the basic interests of the peoples of the two friendly countries.
The discussions also focused on the advancement of the Somali-French relations in areas of mutual benefit in trade, economy, culture, education, security, training of Somali diplomatic cadres, as well as debt relief process.
Bilateral relations between France and Somalia were established shortly after Somalia’s independence. The French government opened an embassy in Mogadishu and its Somali counterpart likewise maintained an embassy in Paris.
The French embassy later closed down operations in June 1993, shortly after the start of the civil war in Somalia.
Following a significantly improved security situation, the Government of France in January 2014 appointed Remi Marechaux as the new French ambassador to Somalia.
