MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – Hundreds of Somali youth took to the beaches along the Indian Ocean in Mogadishu for a cleaning campaign on Saturday.
The volunteers gathered at popular Liido and Jazeera beaches to remove trash and other wastes that were left behind by beachgoers during holidays.
The volunteers include businessmen and hoteliers.
The cleaning exercise was meant to mark World Ocean Day on 8th June.
The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mahdi Mohamed Gulled presided over officially beach cleaning ceremony to mark the World Ocean Day event.
Accompanied by senior Somali government officials, The Deputy PM led cleaning exercise at Lido beach.
He stressed the need to keep the scenery beaches tidy saying the coastline is the potential tourist attraction in future to boost country foreign exchange while improving the economy.
Many of the beaches in Somalia have the potential to be ranked among the top most beautiful beaches in the world.
