Somali students in Egypt participated in the annual cultural and heritage festivals held for foreign students in Cairo.
The government of Egypt has been encouraging the foreign students to hold their cultural and heritage events in Egypt to promote interaction between the different communities living North Africa nation.
Dozens of students clad in Somali traditional attire have displayed traditional music and dances during the ceremony which was attended by officials and students from over 23 countries.
Somali traditional utensils, foods and the traditional way of dressing were showcased during the event.
Dhanto, Shirib, Gobilow Saar among many others were played by Somali students drawn from different universities across Egypt.
Somali ambassador to Egypt, Abdiqani Mohamed Wa’ays who attended the festival has appreciated the student’s move to preserve Somalia’s rich cultural heritage.
“Today, we have realized that our people had strongly preserved their culture. This culture had been handed down from fathers to Sons and it needs to be protected from the modernity and western cultures,” said Wa’ays.
Wa’ays urged the students to keep on preserving the cultural and heritage of their mother country.
“I call on all Somali people across the world and those in this country to preserve their culture. It is important to pass the traditions to our people and our friends so to preserve our rich cultural heritage,” he urged.
He said the embassy is committed to address the challenges facing the students and Somali nationals in Egypt.
The event which also hosted other cultural heritage of students from different countries was attended by officials from Egyptian government.
