MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has today said his government is ready uphold the deal on electoral process signed by Somali government and its member states last September.
During a meeting with International community, President Farmajo has expressed his government’s commitment to hold free and fair elections.
The meeting which took place in Villa Somalia, the president and Somali partner’s envoys in Somalia discussed the political crisis in the country.
In a statement, Villa Somalia said the president termed the progresses made in the polls preparation as a sign of his administration’s willingness to fulfill free, fair and transparent elections.
‘This included the FGS-FMS agreement, approval of elections law, formation of Independent polls body and budget approval,” Villa Somalia said. “We made compromise in regarding to the implementation of the electoral process and needs commitment and encouragement to make sure holding of the elections in accordance with the constitution,” the statement reads in part.”
The meeting between president Farmajo and the international community representatives comes barely two days after Jubbaland and Puntland states announced their FIEIT members, a move welcomed by Somalia’s partners.
In a a statement, the international community called for a single agreed electoral process – without parallel or partial alternatives – that will be conducted peacefully with protection of political space and media freedom, guarantees the 30 per cent women’s quota, and results in a credible and inclusive outcome that serves the national interest.
