Mogadishu, (Halbeeg News) – The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu Monday held a crucial meeting with Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu.
According to sources privy to the meeting, discussion focused on security challenges, economic collaboration, and ongoing IGAD-led initiatives within Somalia.
President Mohamud reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to deepening ties with IGAD and contributing to regional stability.
Dr. Gebeyehu praised Somalia’s progress in state-building, acknowledging the country’s efforts in countering violent extremism, addressing climate-related challenges, and increasing inclusive governance.
He reaffirmed IGAD’s ongoing support for Somalia’s path to sustainable peace and prosperity.
“Somalia is not only a founding member of IGAD but also a critical partner in our shared mission to promote peace and development in the Horn of Africa. We stand with Somalia as it navigates its path toward sustainable peace and prosperity,” he said.
At a separate meeting with Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Fiqi Dr. Gebeyehu signed an agreement that will see the establishment of a Regional Centre of Excellence in Blue Economy.
The center will focus on sustainable maritime development, marking a significant step toward leveraging Somalia’s coastal resources for economic growth.
