Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has called off his trip to Burundi where he was scheduled to attend the CECAFA U-17 match between Somalia and Tanzania which will be played on Sunday.
Sources close to the President said Mr. Farmajo cancelled the trip to respond to the intensifying humanitarian crisis in the country.
The President reportedly directed the deputy Prime Minister, Mahdi Mohamed Guled to attend the CECAFA U-17 match between Somalia and Tanzania which take place on Sunday.
Mr. Guled will lead high delegates comprising of Sport minister, Khadija Mohamed Diriye and former national players.
Reports say former Mogadishu Mayor Thabit Abdi arrived Burundi on Saturday to encourage Somali Junior team who will be facing Tanzania in the final match of CECAFA cup.
Meanwhile President is expected to lead the government’s efforts to rescue the residents affected by floods in River Shabelle.
The government has on Sunday postponed scheduled assessment trip delegates to Beledweyne town of Hiraan region for undisclosed reasons.
Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheire on Saturday appointed committee who comprises 22-member of committee.
The committee was expected to spearhead the government’s efforts to rescue Beledweyne residents.
Prime Minister Kheire appealed the aid agencies to urgently respond and help the victims of the floods.
“We urgently held meeting with various sectors of the community including religious leaders, women and parliamentarians to discuss on emergency response to our people affected by floods in Shabelle River,” he said.
Hirshabelle President, Mohamed Abdi Ware warned the deteriorating situations of Beledweyne people who were displaced by the floods.
“The river has breached its banks and sheet of flood water has covered much of the town leading the displacement of many of the town’s residents,” said Ware
