MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somalia’s National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has today announced the registration seven new political parties in the country.
These parties are joining the 12 parties previously registered by the commission.
The country which plans to make a major shift from the clan-based police that had dominated the Horn of Africa nation’s political life since the onset of the transitional government in 2000 will have 19 political parties.
The chairlady of the commission, Halimo Ismail Ibrahim awarded certificates of registration to the leaders of the parties
The following parties and respective chairpersons, were issued certificates Sunday:
1. Xisbiga shaqaalaha Soomaaliyeed (Labour Party), Mohamed Mukhtar.
2. Xisbiga Xorriyadda Soomaaliyeed (Liberty Party) Ali Jibriel
3. Xisbiga muwaadiniinta Soomaaliyeed, Dr. salad Muse
4. National Unity Party, Sheikh Mohamed Deyfullah.
5. People’s Party- Hussein Hashi.
6. Coalition for Change -Abdullahi Hirsi.
7. Xisbiga Ileys (Light Party) Mohamed Omar Eymoy.
A number of parties have been in existence but not formally registered in line with the country’s new electoral and political party laws.
