MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Dozens of participants including politicians and civil society members have convened in Somali capital on Friday to attend the political parties’ forum.
The one-day meeting has focused on the political situation of the country and the Lower House’s term extension for the government and the parliament, according Somali government spokesperson, Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu.
In a twitter post, Moalimu said the members supported the Lower House’s resolution to extend term for the government to steer the nation towards elections by universal suffrage,
“Outcome of Somali political parties’ meeting in Mogadishu. To support the recent resolution of the Parliament. Strengthening the Reconciliation & Sovereignty. Preparation of universal franchise elections in order Somalis elect their leaders democratically,” the twitter post reads in part.
The development comes amid UN, AU, EU, US, UK and several other international donors opposed extended stay in office by President Mohamed Farmaajo.
Somali partners have affirmed the September 2020 Agreement as the only reference point for ending the long-running electoral crisis in Somalia.
Somali was expected to hold elections early this year but the leaders of the federal government and its members states had failed to agreed process to hold commonly agreed elections, prompting the lower house members to vote for a resolution allowing the government to elections within two years.
