MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali police have defused an Improvised Explosive Device fitted to a car in Mogadishu.
Somali security forces have intensified operations to boost the security of the capital weeks after the city witnessed the deadliest bombings which claimed the lives of people close to 150.
The twin car bombings at Zobe Junction also wounded more than 500 people.
According to a statement by Somali police spokesperson, Sadik Dodishe said the IED was fitted to a car belonging to a civilian.
The police officials acting on a public tip-off reached the scene and dismantled the bomb.
“At around 9:30 AM, Somali Police intercepted two IEDs attached Toyota Surf Vehicle owned by an Innocent Civilian, Technicians have successfully dismantled and demolished it with no casualties of the civilians and the vehicle. at Daljirka Dahsoon area,” the spokesperson said.
The police did not give the details of the owner of the vehicle and if he was a government official.
Al-Shabaab targets government officials, military commanders, and business people who oppose the group’s orders.
The group also carries out deadly bombings in Somalia’s major towns controlled by the Somali government.
Al-Shabaab lost control of Mogadishu in 2011 following days-long fighting with Somali forces backed by African Union forces.
